Am I really a Christian?

“ 14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them? 15 Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. 16 If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it? 17 In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead. “ James 2:14-17 (NIV)

I attend a Bible Study where we have been reading Generous Justice by Timothy Keller. It highlights how Christians really need to have an attitude for helping those less fortunate. Reflecting on this and the Bible passage above motivates me to truly help others with the money, time, and abilities God has given me. Sure, I could go to church and socialize with people there, but then ignore all the needs around me. This also seems like a poor witness to people I tell I am a Christian. Does Nathan really care? Or is he just concerned about his own life and making sure that is not disturbed?

Now I know I can’t meet every need, but God has given me resources to meet some needs. One large need where I live is Latinos learning English. So for the past two weeks Acts 2:42 Ministries has been teaching English to others so they may pass the immigration test. It could also lead to better job opportunities as their English improves.

Usually it isn’t easy to learn another language, however, the people are hungry to learn and improve. It has been a joy to teach them and I look forward to seeing their progress. I also pray for God to bring Christians that know Spanish and English into my life. This would allow their spiritual needs to be fulfilled.

It is great to use what God has given me (knowing English, teaching ability) to meet a practical need and actively live out my faith.
